A specialist psychology service for aviation and clinical health
Excellence in evidence-based care
Finding the right psychological support is a challenge. NHS and private mental health services often use confusing titles and their structure can be confusing making it difficult to identify the one most likely to be helpful for you. In my private practice, I offer specialist psychological assessment and support for aviation professionals and those experiencing a range of health conditions. The knowledge and skills I use in my practice are supported by scientific research and widely acknowledged as effective throughout the NHS. That's what I mean by evidence-based care.
Is this the right service for you?
When you have a physical health issue beyond the remit of your GP, you need an appropriate specialist - you wouldn't ask a cardiologist to treat a skin condition or a dermatologist to replace your hip. It's the same within psychology and mental health services. If you encounter a specific issue or life or work in an environment or industry that presents specific psychological challenges and associated regulation, the most appropriate source of assessment and treatment is a specialist with that area. For mental health issues relating to aviation or clinical health, that's where I come in. Although my two specialities might seem very different, my "about me" page explains why I am passionate about and experienced in both.
Quite simply, if you are an aviation professional looking for assessment, psychological treatment, or support to improve your psychological wellbeing, I am uniquely positioned to help as a commercial pilot and psychologist. I understand the lifestyle, regulatory environment and licensing requirements which your role dictates. I can help with assessments to support the issue or reinstatement of medicals, psychological therapy adapted to the specific needs of aviation and psychological support to those facing the transition of losing a medical.
My experience of working in oncology and palliative care means that I am also able to offer specialist psychological support to those facing potentially life limiting or chronic illness. My experience - and there is extensive scientific research which backs me up - is that the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer commonly have an impact on our psychological wellbeing. For some people that's manageable with the help of family, friends and their medical team. For others, psychological support can help you manage distress in yourself and others, improve your ability to cope with symptoms and live as meaningfully as possible in the f ace of a clinical health condition. I often find that the most effective way I can help is to provide a calm and safe space to talk out loud about topics you want to avoid upsetting loved ones with. My specialist approach means that I can quickly help you identify what support might be useful for you and provide appropriate techniques to enhance your psychological wellbeing. I often work in a way that aims to deliver support in 1 to 3 sessions in this area so that you don't need to fit frequent psychology sessions into a tiring and busy timetable of treatment and symptom management.
If either of these descriptions match your requirements for support, then yes, this is the service for you! Think of me as the mental health equivalent of the medical specialist you would seek out for a specific psychical health complaint.
The evidence-based skills I use in my specialist practice are very effective in the assessment and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders. If you are experiencing depression, anxiety or a phobia, I can provide tailored evidence-based care. And of course, if you have a fear of flying, I'm uniquely positioned to help!
